À la campagne, à Taïwan, Siang naît aveugle dans une famille peu préparée au handicap de son nouveau-né. Enfant curieux et précoce, il grandit en toute liberté grâce à l'amour maternel et au soutien de la famille - jusqu'au jour où il doit aller à l'université, et affronter le monde extérieur. Il y fait la connaissance de Jie, une jolie vendeuse qui voudrait devenir danseuse mais qui, confrontée aux dures réalités de la vie, se sent incapable d'y arriver. Pourtant la détermination à toute épreuve de Siang, son optimisme et sa sérénité vont donner à Jie le courage nécessaire pour poursuivre son rêve.
