Jan 01, 2006José Cura sings and acts here with an inwardness and intensity which make a profound impression. So does Krassimira Stoyanova as Desdemona, not in the first flush of youth, but heartfelt and direct; while Lado Ataneli's Jago is a brilliantly understated study in jovial malevolence. With strong conducting from Antoni Ros-Marbà, the whole cast collaborate to give us the truth of this desperately upsetting work, as no other DVD and few live performances I've seen of it ever have.

Il est rejoint par un trio de grandes dames : Erin Morley chante la poupée mécanique Olympia, Hibla Gerzmava est la fragile Antonia et Christine Rice chante Giulietta, la courtisane vénitienne. La production colorée de Bartlett Sher, vue ici dans sa deuxième présentation Live in HD, met également en vedette Thomas Hampson dans le rôle des sinistres Quatre Méchants et Kate Lindsey dans le rôle de Niklausse, l'ami et muse d'Hoffmann. Yves Abel dirige.

Vittorio Grigolo incarne le pauvre poète Rodolfo qui tombe amoureux de sa voisine, la couturière Mimì, interprétée par la radieuse Kristine Opolais. Susanna Phillips est la coquette Musetta, Massimo Cavaletti est son amoureux Marcello, et Patrick Carfizzi dans le rôle de Schaunard et Oren Gradus dans celui de Colline complètent l'ensemble. Stefano Ranzani dirige l'orchestre.

Sep 04, 2010The tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from assassins hired by her father.

Dans cette retransmission en live HD, la soprano bulgare Sonya Yoncheva incarne la diva éponyme passionnée, face au ténor charismatique Vittorio Grigolo dans le rôle de son amant, le peintre idéaliste Mario Cavaradossi. Le baryton Željko Lučić incarne le menaçant baron Scarpia, le chef de la police qui emploie des tactiques brutales pour piéger à la fois les criminels et ses conquêtes sexuelles. Sur le podium, Emmanuel Villaume dirige la partition électrisante, qui présente certaines des mélodies les plus mémorables de Puccini.

His rival in love, Councillor Lindorf, claims that Hoffmann knows nothing of the heart, and so goads Hoffmann into telling the tales of his three great loves – each destroyed by a villain who bears an uncanny resemblance to Lindorf… First Hoffmann tells of his infatuation for the mechanical doll, Olympia – who is destroyed by the inventor Coppélius. Next comes the courtesan Giulietta, who throws over his adoration in favour of jewels from the magician Dappertutto. Finally, the gentle Antonia is forced to sing to her death by the wicked Doctor Miracle. His stories finished, Hoffmann rouses from his drunken stupor to find Lindorf has made off with Stella, Hoffmann’s latest love – but the Muse compels him to transform his heartache into art.

He is said to be the inventor of a mysterious love potion… In opera, love philtres often provoke terrible tragedies. They also provide the pretext for this gentle comedy in which Sergeant Belcore and the timid Nemorino vie with each other for beautiful Adina’s heart. The stage is set! Bring on the music, which, if we are to believe Donizetti, was composed in a fortnight!

Le ténor Vittorio Grigolo et la soprano Diana Damrau ont enchanté le public dans les rôles des amants maudits de Shakespeare, Damrau faisant preuve d'une virtuosité colorature étincelante et Grigolo livrant un désir passionné et une interprétation émouvante du célèbre air « Ah ! lève-toi, soleil ! » Sur le podium, le maestro Gianandrea Noseda tire toute la richesse des couleurs orchestrales de la riche partition de Gounod.
