Mort centenaire, Hal Roach (1892-1992) a produit environ deux mille films de 1914 au début des années 1960, presque exclusivement des comédies. Il a su s'adjoindre le concours de sacrées vedettes, de Laurel et Hardy à Harold Lloyd en passant par les enfants de la série des «Petites canailles». Il a eu l'une de ces carrières légendaires dont s'enorgueillit l'Amérique : employé des chemins de fer, chercheur d'or, livreur de glaces, enfin chauffeur routier à Los Angeles. C'est là qu'il commence comme figurant dans un western. Dès lors, le cinéma ne le lâche plus. Il crée bientôt ses propres studios que d'aucuns rebaptisent Laugh factory ou Lot of fun.
