Dans l'espoir d'une vie meilleure, deux jeunes couples quittent leurs pays respectifs. Melinda et Nik quittent l'Albanie en bateau pour l'Italie, afin de vivre leur amour interdit. Vera et Marko, quant à eux, quittent la Serbie, en train, pour l'Autriche, via la Hongrie. Marko, violoncelliste talentueux, a la chance d'entrer dans le fameux orchestre philarmonique de Vienne. Mais, à leur arrivée à la frontière, bien qu'ils aient des visas en règle, pour eux, les problèmes commencent... En dépit du fait qu'ils n'ont rien à voir avec un grave incident qui s'est déroulé la veille au Kosovo, et à cause de coïncidences malheureuses, ils sont arrêtés. Leur espoir de réaliser leurs rêves dans cette Europe, synonyme de Terre Promise, s'évanouit. Comme c'est souvent le cas avec les jeunes des Balkans, ils payent les erreurs des générations précédentes...
