Roy Andersson explore les ravages de l’épidémie du sida dans une succession de tableaux absurdes et glaçants. En 1987, alors que l’épidémie progresse, le Conseil national de la santé et du bien-être suédois commande à Roy Andersson un film éducatif sur le VIH. Le réalisateur, qui se consacre essentiellement à la publicité depuis l’échec commercial de Giliap (1975), y déroule une vingtaine de tableaux en plans fixes et aux couleurs ternes, dans lesquels il attaque notamment les connaissances scientifiques sur l’origine du virus. Dénonçant le racisme et la déshumanisation de la médecine, ce film subversif, d’abord désavoué par les autorités, n’a été distribué que quelques années plus tard en Suède, après avoir glané des prix dans des festivals internationaux.
