Un homme vient de perdre son épouse et reste seul avec ses deux enfants : Jean, qui a à peu près dix ans, et sa sœur Pierrette, âgée de cinq ans. Le père se remarie assez rapidement avec une jeune veuve du village, elle-même mère d'une petite Arlette. Averti tardivement, et toujours sous le choc du décès de sa mère, Jean prend très mal ce mariage. Il refuse l'affection et l'autorité de sa belle-mère et vit une rivalité avec sa nouvelle sœur, Arlette, en qui il voit une intruse.

The young daughter of an army captain missing in action runs away from school and is kidnapped by Parisian lowlifes. When the kidnapper flees to Nice with the child, the kind-hearted employee of one of his accomplices sets off in pursuit.

A clerk is unable to keep his wife and family in comfort, and he asks his manager for an increase. But a girl has offered her services to the manager, and as she is willing to accept a smaller wage he engages her instead and tells the man that he can go. The clerk resolves to go to the girl and ask her to give up her place, but she refuses. She discovers he has left his umbrella behind, and finds him just moving, away with his two little children. The girl's heart is touched, and she leads them into the house and warms them at the fire, and writes a letter to the manager, saying she wishes to give up her place, and begging him to take back her predecessor.
