Un thriller d'une oppressante noirceur et d'une grande audace, tant sur la forme que dans son propos quasi féministe, empreint aussi d'une vision marxiste des rapports de classe. Le scénariste José Revueltas et le cadreur Alex Phillips, qui entament alors avec Roberto Gavaldón une collaboration fructueuse, comptent pour beaucoup dans la poignante beauté du film.
