After his wife's accidental death, the once successful pop singer Eric Kersten and his son Peter retired to Lake Maggiore. He spends his time painting pictures that he sells to tourists. One day he meets the pretty Eva, who looks very much like his late wife. He falls in love with her without knowing that his producer sent her to bring him back to music.

The young Ernst Leuchtenthal is planning to travel to the USA for a year to study. Before he leaves, his father asks him for a meeting. Consul Leuchtenthal wants to get his son a "good" marriage before he disappears overseas. The old man has the very young, attractive Christine von Auffenberg in mind, who runs a breeding farm for chinchillas. Ernst is not too keen on marrying a woman his father has chosen for him, especially as he does not love Christine. In the local children's home he meets the light-blonde Marianne, and for him it is like love at first sight.

During WWII The German 'Wehrmacht' is heavily under fire after the invasion of Normandy. There are also a lot of women participating in the war, working at the front line as couriers for the air force. In this war, everyday, they put their lives on the line.
