Les deux femmes ouvrent un modeste restaurant dont la spécialité, une recette de crêpes dont Delilah a le secret, les enrichit. Leur affaire prospère. Peola refuse d’être considérée comme noire : un jour où sa mère vient la chercher à l’école, se sentant humiliée devant les enfants de sa classe, tous blancs, elle s’enfuit en courant.
