In ten days the life story of the "pathetic old man" unwinds before his very eyes. On the last day of World War Two, Zlobec lost the love of his life when a plane named Herzog crashed into the Adriatic sea. Since then he has been obsessed with setting up an altar in her memory. Because of this he was blind for many things, especially for his daughter Ana, who grows into an attractive young girl and is seduced by the elderly Rihard at the age of eighteen. A friendship develops between the girl’s father and lover, but it is soon interrupted by a disastrous flood, which confines Zlobec to a wheelchair. Rihard sets of to seal the seas, while Ana moves away and begins to teach deaf-mute children. She only returns to visit her father once a year, on his birthday. When she returns this time, Rihard reappears and the old flame flares again.

This period ends with a ten-day war, when the identity turns from peacefulness, modesty and diligence into courage and a fighting spirit. The film documents the changes in Slovenia and its inhabitants, which have in recent years brought us to a completely different understanding of national identity, different from the one which was true in Slovenia as well as abroad twenty years ago.

The story relates with a gentle melancholy and a slight irony the lives of a middle-class family: the cafe owner, his wife and their son. Through their individual destinies we become acquainted with the social and historical background of a by-gone era; the social and national differences of pre-war Maribor, divisions among the wealthy and poor, and nationally minded Slovenes and fanatic Germanophils. The first year after the war introduced the absurd characteristic cruel measures of the so-called revolutionary social transformations in which calamity and coincidence intervene, resulting in events of comic nature, of course, as seen from a safe distance of fifty years.

They scatter among the town and woods and performed all kinds of mischief. Sophie just can't get her broom to fly, because she became too fat. The monsters, disappointed over the century in which we live, return back into the book, the witch Sophie loses her magic power and becomes 'Aunt Sophie', and Tiny Peat has changed into a black cat.

The main character of the story is an 11-year-old boy, Felix, who is trapped together with his classmates and teacher Jasna in an unmoving column of vehicles on a high mountain road, because of army barricades. The heroes of the story are involuntarily caught between the two enemy military groups. On this day in June, many others find themselves on this road together with the pupils on their school bus - people from various European countries who are traveling south: Frenchmen, Italians, Hungarians, Germans, and, of course, Slovenians; a blend of different professions, nationalities and religions. All of them are individuals who, on a warm summer day, suddenly find themselves in the midst of war.
