Le général Phéridès profite d’une pause de sa compagnie pour se rendre sur l’île des morts où se trouve le tombeau de sa femme. Il est accompagné d’un journaliste du Boston Star, Oliver Davis, correspondant de guerre des Balkans. Arrivés sur place, ils découvrent que le tombeau a été profané et que le corps a disparu. Ils se rendent dans la demeure qui jouxte le cimetière pour chercher une explication. Invités par leurs hôtes à y passer la nuit, ils se retrouvent au petit matin confrontés à un danger inattendu : la peste s’est abattue sur l’île et nul ne peut quitter les lieux avant que le vent ne dissipe le mal. Pour une vieille habitante, la peste cache en fait un mal plus profond, la Vorvoloka, créature maléfique qui se nourrit de l’énergie des gens durant la nuit.
