Un homme disparaît sans laisser de traces. Son amante, une politicienne mariée, contacte discrètement le détective privé Varg Veum afin de solliciter son aide. Ce dernier retrouve son amant assassiné, et le mari de la politicienne est arrêté pour ce meurtre. Cependant, il s'agit selon Varg d'une erreur judiciaire et le detective s'implique dans une affaire de meurtre qui dépasse largement les frontières norvégiennes, avec des adversaires qui ne reculeront devant rien.
