The young and fanatical Jon is appointed pastor to a remote church in 15th century Iceland. As is custom, he marries the widow of his predecessor, a woman much older than he is. He is ardent in his fight against Satan, and the villagers don't dare to question his authority. Ragnar has left his family farm and works as a taxi driver in Reykjavík in the early sixties. He's drawn to the beautiful but unhappy girl Gogo and hopes to build a better life with her. But she's a lost soul and their brief romance results in tragedy.

Seeking revenge against the rival clan responsible for the killing, Hagbard, the son of a slain Norse king, calms down long enough to establish a truce. He also falls in love with Signe, the daughter of his one-time enemy. Signe's former beau, sizzling with jealousy, breaks the truce and makes it appear that Hagbard was responsible.
