An old monastery in a small, remote village in Suffolk, England has been haunted by a local legend for centuries. Left in ruin and shrouded by the mystery of a dark spirit that wills young couples to suicide, the place has been avoided for years, marked only by a twisted, ancient tree with an ominous hollow said to be the home of great evil. When four friends on holiday explore the local folklore, they realize that belief in a myth can quickly materialize into reality, bringing horror to life for the town.

Well meaning friends try to persuade Suzanne, a beautiful widow, to remarry and the choice seems to be between Frank, a philandering dentist, and Tony, a sensitive, failing sports trainer who helps her son.

Veille de Noël, 1938, Madge Arwell vient en aide au Docteur dont le vaisseau s’est écrasé sur Terre. Elle l’escorte jusqu’à son Tardis et il promet de lui rendre la pareille à l’occasion. Trois ans plus tard, pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, Madge et les enfants doivent évacuer Londres pour la maison d'un parent dans le Dorset. Rongée par le chagrin à cause de l’annonce de la mort de son mari au combat, elle souhaite tout de même offrir à ses enfants Lis et Cyril le meilleur Noël possible. Accueillis par le Docteur que Madge ne reconnaît pas, ils vont se retrouver tous les quatre dans une mystérieuse forêt…

Dernier représentant des Seigneurs du temps et âgé de plus de 900 ans, Le Docteur parcourt l'espace et le temps dans son TARDIS. Amoureux de la race humaine, il se fait régulièrement accompagner par une femme ou un homme. Partagé entre folie et génie, insouciant mais conscient de ses responsabilités, il défendra l'humanité quel que soit le prix à payer.
