Un orphelin de guerre est trouvé dans les rues de Tokyo et est envoyé en pension chez une veuve d'une cinquantaine d'années, Tané. Ayant du mal à supporter la présence de cet enfant au début, Tané se met peu à peu à l'aimer et est désespérée lorsque le père de l'enfant est retrouvé…

Professeur de gymnastique, Nobuko arrive de province pour enseigner dans une école pour filles. Elle est mise à dure épreuve par Eiko, une élève effrontée dont le père, un homme haut placé, finance l'établissement.

Dans une station thermale, un pensionnaire se blesse en posant le pied sur une épingle à cheveux perdue dans un bassin. Après un échange épistolaire, une belle jeune femme se présente pour s'excuser de l'incident. Une idylle se noue entre eux.

Akiko Hojo, a nurse at Aisei Catholic Hospital, is spending another public holiday at Kotaro Hidaka's house. Hidaka, who is a poor musician suffers from tuberculosis, feels an unbearable love for Akiko, who takes great care of him during his visits. Because of his worries about his illness he doesn't want Akiko to be as unhappy as he is. Akiko loves Hidaka but there was one question. Is it because one side of Akiko has the essence of a woman living in an era when she's alone? Or, maybe it's because she nods to the reality of life...

Pretty Oshige is deceived by her first love. After this, she lives a hard lifestyle, working at a number of jobs. Her only pleasure is her nephew, who eventually becomes a merchant marine. When Oshige meets her old love ten years later, she is able to forgive him and even thank him for the path her life has taken.

Machiko falls in love with a mysterious man, but her family wants something different for her.

A young man rents an apartment in Tokyo and discover it was built by his father. He falls in love with the daughter of the mistress of the house and decides to marry her. Only to discover that his father is is in debt and wants him to marry Ranko so that she may help his company by granting 1.5 million yen. Teruko decides to borrow money from a greedy bar owner who lends her money on certain conditions and photographs her without her consent. A love traingle forms between Koroku, Ranko, and Teruko. Things complicate when Koroku marries Teruko and Tsugawa threatens them for the money causing many twists and turns.

Adaptation of Kishida Kunio's novel. Set against the backdrop of a power struggle within a hospital, depicts the love lives of the director's daughter, the administrative director, a doctor, and a nurse.

The film features the first scene with kissing in a Japanese film. Kiss scenes were encouraged by the American occupiers of Japan following World War II as it encouraged westernization and contrasted with the traditional bow prevalent in that country.

A nurse's tale of self-sacrifice during wartime. The title is borrowed from a patriotic song made popular by singer Hamako Watanabe during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
