Bien que le thème principal ici traité soit l'héroïque résistance polonaise à l'occupant nazi, ce film, d'inspiration marxiste, comporte des éléments subversifs tendant à démontrer l'efficacité de l'idéologie communiste à laquelle l'auteur oppose un christianisme désuet et inopérant.
