Après avoir perdu leur planète natale, les survivants du peuple des Cthulhu, une race extraterrestre, errent dans l'espace à la recherche d'une nouvelle terre d'accueil. Mais Big Gold, une entité ancestrale source de vie, prend possession du vaisseau et de son meneur, Sir Violet, puis dirige sa convoitise vers la Terre. L'histoire commença lorsque deux créatures divines (Léviathan et Bahamut) menèrent un combat acharné juste au dessus de la ville de Tokyo. La forte intensité de leur lutte créa un pilier obscur sur Terre qui inspira un sentiment de peur et de confusion dans la population. Les scientifiques chargés d'étudier cette colonne, Joe et Marie Hayakawa, entamèrent des recherches sur ce phénomène.
