1950, prison de Sighet, Roumanie. C’est là, derrière les barreaux, qu’un groupe d’évêques gréco-catholiques est emprisonné par les autorités communistes, dans le but de les amener à renier toute forme d’allégeance au Vatican, perçu comme une influence étrangère. Un homme s’élève parmi eux qui devient progressivement un guide pour chaque prêtre : l’évêque Iuliu Hossu.

Quand l’usine que Csilla dirige décide de recruter des employés étrangers, la paix de la petite communauté est troublée, les angoisses gagnent aussi les adultes. Les frustrations, les conflits et les passions refont surface, brisant le semblant de paix dans la communauté.

Set on the background of economical migration, the film tells the story of Clara, a divorced Romanian mother in her thirties who needs to work abroad in Ulm, a German Town by the Danube river. She is as a babysitter for a little girl that is very fond of. At the same time, she had to leave behind her own 12 years old son who is now in the care of his grandfather. They live in a poor Romanian village also by the Danube river. Feeling abandoned by his mother, the boy runs away from home in an attempt to reach his mother by traveling on a small boat upriver. In this context, Clara has to come back home and face the life she left behind.

Viorel, a quiet, upright tractor driver from a small town in west Romania meets Mocanu, a high profile politician campaigning for a seat in the European Parliament. Mocanu’s car has broken down nearby and Viorel and his wife welcome the politician into their humble home. Under investigation for corruption, Mocanu sees an opportunity and decides to stay with this modest family during the rest of the campaign, winning people’s hearts by posing as a common man next to his “old friend”, the honest, hard-working farmer. In return, Viorel will get a new tractor.
