Arad, en Roumanie, été 1968. Le jeune médecin Mihai, issu de la communauté allemande, maintient comme il peut l’unité familiale depuis la mort de sa mère. Il doit composer avec son petit frère Emil, très politisé, dont il peine à canaliser l’esprit de rébellion, et son vieux père William, qui perd peu à peu la vue et le goût de vivre. Sous le prétexte de vacances en famille, tous trois s’embarquent dans un périple en voiture pour la RDA, où William devra en réalité subir une opération décisive. Mais dès qu'ils franchissent la frontière entre la Tchécoslovaquie et l'Allemagne de l’Est, leur voyage s'interrompt. Les chars du pacte de Varsovie viennent de traverser la frontière, et s’apprêtent à réprimer le printemps de Prague…
