Mario, un jeune arpenteur, arrive à San Lorenzo, au pied des Andes, pour superviser le chantier de construction d'une route destinée à convoyer un bateau à vapeur. Le chantier donne aux habitants l'espoir d'un boom économique. C'est dans une atmosphère un peu particulière que Mario fait la connaissance de Rosa, une indienne obsédée par la disparition de son père. Touché par sa détresse, le jeune homme décide de l'aider à retrouver son père, mais il se heurte immédiatement à l'hostilité des habitants de San Lorenzo. Tandis qu'il en vient à les soupçonner d'avoir éliminé le vieil homme, il rencontre la belle Gloria qui, malgré le fait qu'elle soit mariée, lui fait des avances à peine voilées...
