Ils parviennent à rejoindre la propriété familiale de Tomasz, réquisitionnée par la Wehrmacht. Le jeune homme rejoint alors le maquis et, à son retour, apprend de sa mère qu'Hanna est morte. Il n'en est rien : cette dernière est en réalité partie vers l'Ouest. En 1976, Hanna, installée à New York où elle a fondé une famille, reconnaît Tomasz à la télévision : il témoigne dans une émission de sa vie à Auschwitz. Elle fait alors tout pour le retrouver...
