C'est l'histoire nostalgique, et parfois pathétique, de deux vieux danseurs mondains, un peu fripés, aux prises avec un monde hostile, où tout est dominé par la télévision et qui sont tous les deux convoqués pour exécuter trente ans plus tard un numéro de claquettes dans une gigantesque émission en direct.

Le docteur Apfelglück, psychiatre réputé, reçoit les patients les plus insolites, tel Martineau qui, effectuant une livraison par une nuit d'orage, tombe dans une auberge tenue par les Ténardier qui maltraitent une Cosette septuagénaire. Martinez, animateur d'un jeu télévisé, est persécuté par un candidat raciste et grossier, Lebeurk qui, semaine après semaine, accumule une véritable fortune. Quant à Martini, il est persuadé qu'il existe des lunettes permettant de voir les gens nus. C'en est trop pour Apfelglück, qui s'endort et se met à rêver d'un curieux paradis, semblable au lotissement d'une ville nouvelle, où règne l'ordre moral le plus strict...
