At the Teatro Real in Madrid, director Laurent Pelly and conductor Giacomo Sagripanti get to grips with Gioachino Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy) – a delightful opera buffa teeming with colourful characters!

In the depths of the Rhine, the three Rhinemaidens guard the Rhinegold, a treasure of immeasurable value. The Nibelung dwarf Alberich is dazzled by the sight of it. The girls explain that whoever wins the gold and forges it into a ring will gain power over the world, but must first renounce love. Frustrated by his unsuccessful attempts to catch one of the girls, Alberich curses love and steals the gold. Wotan, lord of the gods, is reproached by his wife Fricka: he has promised to give Freia, goddess of youth, to the giants Fasolt and Fafner in return for their building a fortress for the gods. When the giants demand their reward, Loge, the god of fire, suggests an alternative payment: the ring Alberich has forged from the Rhinegold, and his other treasures. The giants agree, and Wotan and Loge leave for the Nibelungs’ underground home.

Gioachino Rossini : Le Turc en Italie

In an apparent idyll high in the Swiss Alps, a secluded village society prepares for the next wedding. Amina is to be the lucky one this time. The groom Elvino, however, soon turns his attention back to his former wife because Amina sleepwalks into the bed of a stranger who has just arrived. Count Rodolfo, son of the former lord of the manor and travelling incognito, cannot convince the villagers of his innocence nor that of Amina, until she sleepwalks again and the collective belief in the supernatural is put to the test.

La partition d’une beauté douloureuse de Puccini exprime avec charme le sort de Magda (l’« hirondelle » du titre) qui trouve de manière inattendue le véritable amour avec le beau jeune Ruggero. Mais leur vie idyllique et heureuse prend fin prématurément car elle est hantée par la peur que son passé mouvementé ne ruine son avenir. Angela Gheorghiu et Roberto Alagna incarnent les amants maudits de Puccini. Les décors art déco élégants et sophistiqués d’Ezio Frigerio ajoutent une touche éblouissante à la production de Nicholas Joël, créée en 2008.

Le directeur musical James Levine dirige sa première nouvelle production Met après une absence de deux ans : la mise en scène à succès de Robert Carsen de la grande comédie humaine de Verdi. Ambrogio Maestri est un Falstaff idéal, à la tête d'un ensemble extraordinaire de stars vétérans et montantes du Met, dont Angela Meade (Alice), Stephanie Blythe (Mistress Quickly), Franco Vasallo (Ford) et Jennifer Johnson Cano (Meg). Lisette Oropesa et Paolo Fanale sont les jeunes amants, Nannetta et Fenton.

Le ténor vedette Jonas Kaufmann apporte une intensité douloureuse et un charisme vocal au héros torturé de l’adaptation de Goethe de Massenet. Sophie Koch, pour ses débuts au Met, est une Charlotte séduisante et élégante, l'objet de l'affection passionnée de Werther qui mènera à la tragédie. Lisette Oropesa dans le rôle de Sophie, David Bižić dans le rôle d'Albert et Jonathan Summers dans le rôle de la co-star du Bailli. La production atmosphérique de Richard Eyre est dirigée par le maestro montant Alain Altinoglu.

Les Huguenots is a monumental fresco featuring various impossible loves in the context of the Saint Bartholomew Massacre. Andreas Kriegenburg places these timeless conflicts of love and religion in an immaculate setting in which the costumes appear yet more flamboyant and the victims’ blood more violently red.

Love can be questionable, especially when it involves forgery and attempted murder. David Alden directs and Daniel Oren conducts.

Cette version délicieusement sombre du conte de fées bien-aimé des frères Grimm, qui s'adresse à un public de tous âges, faisait partie de la série de spectacles de vacances en langue anglaise du Met. Alice Coote et Christine Schäfer interprètent les célèbres frères et sœurs perdus dans les bois, qui luttent contre la sorcière vorace - une interprétation loufoque du ténor Philip Langridge - tandis que l'orchestre du Met, sous la direction de Vladimir Jurowski, se délecte de la riche partition d'inspiration folklorique.

One of today’s most compelling singing actresses, Karita Mattila takes on the irresistible role of Manon Lescaut, the headstrong young woman torn between a life of luxury and the call of her true love: the Chevalier des Grieux, played by Marcello Giordani. The young Puccini lavished some of his most sensual music on this early hit, conducted here by James Levine.

Antonio Pappano conducts a stellar cast of singers in favourite arias, duets and choruses from operas by Rossini, Donizetti and Puccini, along with the thrilling finale of Bizet’s Carmen. Italian baritone Vito Priante offers haircuts as the Barber of Seville, and Lisette Oropesa dazzles with her flawless soprano coloratura before being joined by American tenor Charles Castronovo for some heartwarming comedy in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina starts out as Cinderella celebrating her good fortune and then magically transforms into femme fatale Carmen for the tragic finale of Bizet’s great opera. The drama increases with Kristine Opolais singing the role of doomed diva Tosca, with Canadian baritone Gerald Finley joining her for the searing Te Deum from Puccini’s masterpiece. The chorus and orchestra of the Royal Opera House are arrayed throughout the stalls of the fabulous auditorium at Covent Garden to maintain social distancing. Presented by Katie Derham.

A brilliant comedy about a lecherous glutton who vainly attempts to seduce two women at once, Falstaff features renowned Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in one of his legendary signature roles. Spanish soprano Ainhoa Arteta is Alice Ford and Italian baritone Fabio Capitanucci makes his Company debut as her husband.

Mario Martone signs direction and scenes of this new film-work of Verdi's masterpiece. On the podium of the Orchestra of the Teatro dell'opera in Rome its musical director, maestro Daniele Gatti. the new set-up of the opera to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is embellished with costumes by Anna Biagiotti and photography by Pasquale Mari.
