Franco Fortini

Le film est une sorte de présentation du livre de Franco Fortini « I Cani del Sinai ». Fortini, un juif italien, lit des extraits du livre sur son aliénation du judaïsme et des relations sociales qui l'entourent, la montée du fascisme en Italie, l'attitude anti-arabe de la culture européenne. Les images, principalement une série de clichés de paysages italiens, constituent une toile de fond qui met en évidence le sens du texte.

Conçu en six parties, Kommunisten est un parcours dans l'histoire du XXe siècle, mêlant Malraux et des fragments des films précédents de Jean-Marie Straub.
