Tony, un trapéziste, trouve un emploi dans un petit cirque. Lorsqu'une tempête emporte le chapiteau, Tony reste par amour pour la belle Belmira qui pourrait être cavalière... s'ils n'avaient pas vendu le cheval. Ils jouent en plein air, dorment à la belle étoile, économisent chaque centime, et bientôt il faut acheter une nouvelle tente... à crédit. Mais Belmira n'est pas heureuse, elle rêve d'une vraie maison, tandis que Tony est fasciné par le cirque. Et les jours sombres sont de retour.

The Soares are a bourgeois couple, living in a good neighbourhood of Lisbon, but João, their son, is not integrating well in that pattern. He attends more political meetings than classes at the Faculty of Economy, and gets a job but that's short lived because his female boss makes him her lover.
