Incapables de s’adapter aux exigences de la métropole, Isabel et ses filles Maria et Ana s’isolent et s’abandonnent à la nostalgie d’une époque révolue. Parallèlement, Iná, ancienne esclave des Soares, arrive en ville avec sa famille et se trouve confrontée à une structure sociale qui n’a pas encore intégré les Noirs affranchis comme citoyens à part entière. Les délires de plus en plus réguliers d’Ana annoncent la tragédie qui plane sur tous les personnages.
