A group of Joe Penner's relatives get together to fix up a house for a pair of newlyweds. Coordination and planning is not the order of the day, so they eventually end up completely wrecking the house.

Sid (John Raitt) vient d'être embauché comme directeur de l'Sleeptite Pajama usine à Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Il tombe bientôt amoureux de Babe (Doris Day), une ouvrière et délégué syndicale. Au pique-nique d'entreprise, ils deviennent un couple, mais Babe s'inquiète des conséquences dans son travail. Le syndicat fait pression pour une augmentation de sept cents de l'heure pour se mettre en conformité avec la norme de l'industrie, mais Sid refuse. En représailles, les travailleurs se mettent en grève et encrassent délibérément les pyjamas. Quand Babe sabote certaines machines, Sid la renvoie.
