Dans la Bavière d'après guerre, Maria vit le grand amour avec un ancien prisonnier français sans se douter que son mari est encore en vie. Un petit village de la campagne bavaroise dans les années 50. Maria, dont le mari est porté disparu depuis l'offensive des armées allemandes en URSS pendant la guerre, a trouvé le grand amour : Jean-Pierre, un ancien prisonnier français venu travailler dans l'exploitation des beaux-parents de la jeune femme. Ce Breton - auquel la mer manque parfois - s'est bien acclimaté, est un compagnon solide et un second père affectueux pour le fils de Maria. Grâce à cet amour, cette dernière peut s'évader d'un monde rural étroit et mesquin. Mais voilà qu'arrive une lettre : Hans était en captivité en URSS, il vient d'être libéré et sera bientôt de retour...
