Dot et Eddie tombent amoureux et Eddie finit par proposer le mariage à Dot, un peu pour lui éviter d'affronter son frère lorsqu'il la raccompagne à quatre heures du matin. Très vite le jeune couple doit faire face à son passé : Dot a perdu sa maman à sa naissance et Eddie vient d'une famille très pauvre. Lorsque Dot se rend compte qu'elle est enceinte elle n'ose le dire à Eddie persuadée qu'il ne désire pas d'enfant car il soutient que les parents sont fous de mettre des enfants au monde...
