Death’s bells toll in tune to the march of war. On top of devastating losses, espionage also cripples General Müller’s army. The poor child Inger must endure trials of an almost biblical nature before her heart can be saved by true love. First, Inger is rejected by the love of her youth, Hans, who chooses a rich man’s daughter instead. Præsten på Snarø, Adam Valerius, er enkemand på tredje år, og frøkenerne i sognet står i kø for at blive den næste præstefrue. Men da Adams enlige husholderske pludselig bliver gravid, går snakken i det lille samfund, og snart bliver biskoppen tilkaldt. Ved et skæbnens puds bliver den københavnske skuespiller Emil Flor, som er på vej til øen, forvekslet med biskoppen, og han lever sig ind i rollen og løser elegant konflikten. Men så dukker den rigtige biskop op… Hele Danmarks Ib Schønberg var her, der og alle vegne i dansk film i 1940'erne. Men det var i denne komedie af Emanuel Gregers, at han oplevede sin karrieres største komediesucces. I ”Biskoppen”, som blev indspillet midt i besættelsestiden, er han den forfængelige skuespiller Flor, der griber chancen, da den rigtige ”rolle” byder sig. Og som desværre bliver i rollen til efter tæppefald!

A boy from a poor family grows up to become a successful scientist. The demanding work costs him the love of his life which he bitterly regrets, lying on his death bed. The film was found on four reels in a collection from the local history archive in Aalborg. They were registered as four separate films, but both the style of the intertitles and the actors indicate that the reels belong together. The film's program has not been found, which makes it difficult to identify whether there are parts missing. (stumfilm.dk)

The poor shipwright's daughter Hulda i dating the equally poor clerk Aage. One day she meets theatre manager Winckler who makes her a famous varieté star. Despite her many new suitors, Hulda still only has eyes for Aage. But, as Hulda proclaims, she cannot marry an impoverished clerk. The burning desire for Hulda pushes Aage to desperate measures.
