Hanno Herbst, entraîneur de plongeon sportif, a toutes les peines du monde à comprendre son fils. Petit gros à lunettes, rêveur et amateur de musique ringarde, le jeune Florian n'a rien de l'athlète dont rêverait son paternel. Il préfère passer du temps avec sa mère, dont il est très proche. Quand cette dernière, victime d'un AVC, se retrouve plongée dans un coma irréversible, le tête-à-tête s'annonce pénible. Le fils et son père devront tant bien que mal apprendre à se connaître et à accepter le drame. Tandis que Hanno accuse le coup dans la solitude et l'alcool, Florian se découvre une attirance pour Radu, un garçon de son âge que son père entraîne, avec lequel il fait les quatre cents coups.

À Munich, Nele, une jeune Estonienne passionnée de chant lyrique, travaille dans un centre d'appel et le soir tient le vestiaire de l'Opéra national.
