À la fin du XIXe siècle, dans le Paris de la Belle Époque, Christian, un jeune poète désargenté, s'installe dans le quartier de Montmartre. Il découvre un univers où se mêlent sexe, drogue et french cancan, mais se rebelle contre ce milieu décadent en menant une vie de bohème. Christian rêve d'écrire une grande pièce, et le peintre Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec est prêt à lui donner sa chance. Celui-ci a besoin d'un spectacle grandiose pour le Moulin Rouge et le poète est embauché pour rédiger le livret de la revue. C'est là qu'il tombe amoureux de la courtisane Satine, la star du prodigieux cabaret....

Janvier 1969, un boeing 737 atterrit dans une petite ville perdue du bush australien. A bord de l'avion, le célèbre trompettiste de jazz Billy Cross voyage avec son orchestre. Timothy and his family is expecting a French-Canadian male exchange student, that turns out to be an attractive girl, to which Timothy proceeds to make a fool of himself, trying to impress. When Michelle becomes ill from drinking spiked punch at a party, Timothy notices a tattoo while helping her to bed. He foolishly tells a friend about the tattoo, who proceeds to tell the whole school, which does not go down well with Michelle.

His friends cannot cope with his condition, but his hospital isolation is relieved by Marty - a street kid survivor who was found dying of leukemia. Marty bullies, taunts, and challenges Kirk, until he begins to climb out of his depression. Marty seems afraid of nothing and, knowing she will die, wants to experience everything.
