Comme chaque été, la petite Salomé retrouve le village familial, niché au creux des montagnes portugaises, le temps des vacances. Tandis que celles-ci commencent dans l’insouciance, sa grand-mère adorée meurt subitement. Alors que les adultes se déchirent au sujet des obsèques, Salomé est hantée par l’esprit de celle que l'on considérait comme une sorcière.

Contemplating the failure of his life, Rogério drinks until losing control of his actions and involves himself in a bar brawl. His alcoholic drift takes him to the city port, where he falls asleep while watching passing ships. When a young woman appears in the night, seemingly running from something, Rogério offers to help and enters a nightmare he never imagined it could become his.

Une nuit, des travailleurs surprennent la direction en train de vider leur usine de ses machines. Ils comprennent qu'elle est en cours de démantèlement et qu'ils vont bientôt être licenciés. Pour empêcher la délocalisation de la production, ils décident d'occuper les lieux. The story of Maria, a woman betrayed by his companion, David, when he steals a sack of money and flees, taking refuge in the island of Pico. However, David, on a visit to the island of Faial, falls in love with a local, Marina. In a final confrontation, as in a Greek tragedy, Mary and David adjust the accounts that fate has traced to them.
