Ferrare, 1943. Épouse d'un pharmacien paralytique, Anna Barilari retrouve un ancien ami, déserteur. Celui-ci est le fils d'un avocat qui va être abattu, ainsi qu'une dizaine d'autres notables de la ville, à l'aube du 16 décembre 1943 par des squadristi fascistes de Vénétie. Ce règlement de comptes entre factions mussoliniennes sera camouflé en attentat commis par la Résistance. Des années plus tard, le compagnon d'Anna, père de famille riche, vivant désormais à l'étranger, revient avec sa famille à Ferrare pour y passer des vacances. Il rencontre dans un café l'assassin de son père, parlant de football avec d'autres clients. Les deux hommes se serrent la main. Sans amertume et sans rancune apparentes, ils n'évoquent pas une seule fois le terrible événement d'autrefois.

The story takes plays during the annual Good Friday pageant in a tiny Italian village. Local priest Don Vincenzo faces a crisis when the girl selected to play the Virgin Mary shows up pregnant.

Based on the misdeeds of the criminal group headed by Paolo Casaroli, who were dedicated to robbing banks.

A young woman, her sister-in-law and her ten year old daughter are violently traumatised by invading Austrian soldiers. Later, in Verona, both woman discover they are pregnant. After a suicide attempt, one has an abortion the other keeps her child - and both faces struggles with friends and family as they return to their homes.

While recuperating from their injuries in a hospital, three young women flash back to the events leading up to the catastrophe. Remata (Lia Amando) has spent her entire life trying to overcome a childhood rape. Annamaria (Antonella Lualdi) has recently come out of an unfortunate marriage to a wealthy but insensitive boor. And Gianna (Eleanore Rossi Drago), the daughter of a college professor, has ruined her life with narcotics.
