Un lycéen nerd, Jerry Mitchell, est contraint d'écrire une nouvelle pour le journal officiel de l'établissement à propos d'un nouveau venu, Buddy Revell, qui est réputé pour être un vrai barjo. Quand Jerry heurte accidentellement Buddy, ce dernier le met au défi de le retrouver à 3 heures du matin dans le parking du lycée pour régler leurs comptes. Jerry va devoir tout faire pour éviter la confrontation avec ce psychopathe.

A bordello catering to rich and wealthy clients, run by Lil Hutton experiences a series of crises as one girl ends up pregnant, and another dead. As a subplot, a young woman, Julie Taylor, makes a trip to LA to surprise a friend, but never finds her. Julie is mugged, and seeks help from Lil Hutton. She sees how much the prostitutes are making, and is tempted into the lifestyle. On her first "job" is hired by a rich father for his 18-year old virgin son as a birthday gift, and they fall in love. But the relationship comes to a quick end as soon as the son learns she is a "whore"; Julie breaks down and runs off after realizing prostitution is a cold and loveless occupation that cannot fulfill her emotional emptiness.

Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard leaves Europe, eventually arriving in the United States. With the help of Einstein, he persuades the government to build an atomic bomb. The project is given to no-nonsense Gen. Leslie Groves who selects physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to head the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, where the bomb is built. As World War II draws to a close, Szilard has second thoughts about atomic weapons, and policy makers debate how and when to use the bomb.
