Le film évoque l’atmosphère scolaire, ses pesanteurs et les espoirs qui s’y expriment. L’histoire raconte trois jours de la vie d’un professeur, Ilya Tsemenovitch. Il a connu la guerre et enseigne brillamment l’histoire depuis des années. Ilya aime sans oser le lui dire Natacha, son ancienne élève, devenue professeur d’anglais. Mais Natacha, elle aussi, aime Ilya : elle saura lui faire croire au bonheur.
