Two years prior to the opening scene, the nobleman Florestan has exposed or attempted to expose certain crimes of the nobleman Pizarro. In revenge, Pizarro has secretly imprisoned Florestan in the prison over which Pizarro is governor. The jailer of the prison, Rocco, has a daughter, Marzelline, and a servant (or assistant), Jaquino. Florestan’s wife, Leonore, came to Rocco’s door dressed as a boy seeking employment, and Rocco hired her. On orders, Rocco has been giving Florestan diminishing rations until he is nearly starved to death. Place: A Spanish state prison, a few miles from Seville; Time: Late 18th century.

Tristan est chargé de ramener en Cornouailles Isolde, princesse d'Irlande, qui doit y épouser le roi Marke. Elle se révolte contre ce qu'elle considère comme une trahison de Tristan, qu'elle a jadis soigné et guéri. Par la vertu d'un philtre magique, ils s'éprennent violemment l'un de l'autre. Malgré son mariage avec le roi Marke, Isolde reste unie à Tristan par un amour inébranlable. Les deux amants sont surpris par le souverain en pleine nuit d'amour. Dans la bousculade qui s’ensuit, Tristan est blessé. Il doit s'enfuir dans ses terres de Bretagne où il agonise en réclamant la présence d'Isolde. Celle-ci arrive pour recueillir son dernier soupir. Isolde, en extase, lance un dernier chant d'amour et meurt à son tour.

King Henry VIII (Enrico VIII) of 16th century England falls in love with his queen's lady-in-waiting, Jane Seymour (Giovanna Seymour). The queen, Anne Boleyn (Anna Bolena) has a former lover, Lord Percy, whom Heny recalls from exile in order to tempt the queen into a compromising situation. When Anne rebuffs Lord Percy because she is married, Percy threatens to kill himself. However, Henry rushes into the room with an entourage and claims the couple has betrayed him. Henry sends Percy and Anne to jail and eventually to their death.
