Mar 21, 2009Alors qu'une jeune femme s'apprête à épouser son amoureux, elle est découverte, par tout le village - sans parler de son fiancé -, endormie dans la chambre d'un inconnu. Il faut deux actes au jeune homme pour comprendre que le somnambulisme est à blâmer, et tout se termine bien. Natalie Dessay dans le rôle d'Amina et Juan Diego Flórez dans le rôle d'Elvino livrent la magie du bel canto et des feux d'artifice vocaux dans la production de Mary Zimmerman en 2009. Le réalisateur transfère le conte bucolique de Bellini dans une salle de répétition du New York contemporain, où une compagnie d’opéra répète La Sonnambula et où les chanteurs sont véritablement amoureux les uns des autres.

Diana Damrau chante la vertueuse comtesse Adèle et Joyce DiDonato incarne Isolier, la page du comte, elle aussi amoureuse de la comtesse. Les blagues, les malentendus et les déguisements sexistes – y compris les chevaliers déguisés en nonnes – abondent dans cette histoire hilarante de tromperie et de séduction. Maurizio Benini dirige.

She embodies the modest and charming Amina, this sleepwalker who, escaping from her bedroom, becomes another person as she wanders through the night. This opera by Bellini is a score seemingly written in a daydream, where melody is apparently suspended in time and the heroine's very soul rises to the surface, and where instruments take on transparent tones. At the same time, Bellini portrays the cruelest of worlds – our own – where it is more than difficult for fragility and gentleness to shine past the darker rashness and unfriendliness of the characters.

Beside her, the famous bass-baritone Michele Pertusi, as Athanaël, shows once again his unquestionable style. On the podium is Marcello Viotti, music director of the Venetian theatre. The story of the conversion of the beautiful courtesan, and the clash between spirituality and sensuality have been portrayed brilliantly by Pier Luigi Pizzi, one of today’s most talented opera directors. The visual quality of this production is indeed one of its strong points, and the DVD recording will not fail to fascinate the viewer.
