Witeck est un jeune étudiant. Il vit avec sa mère aux environs de Wilno, en Lituanie polonaise, région ou se côtoient plusieurs communautés. Brillant, il échafaude des projets d'avenir. Il ignore qu'il est a la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Au hasard d'un voyage en train, il rencontre un mystérieux inconnu qui émet des doutes sur les projets du jeune homme. Peu après, Witek rencontre Alina dont il tombe amoureux. La famille de la jeune fille va tout tenter pour empêcher leur amour.

The title character of the film is a retired nurse who lives alone and is always in a hurry to help others. She knows perfectly well what pain and suffering are, she has experienced the loss of people closest to her, and as a nurse she has become accustomed to transience and death.
