Le capitaine met alors la main sur la fortune du défunt – qui fera de lui un important marchand de blé – et ne tarde pas à épouser Kondja. Mais ce mariage de convenance tourne court : notre héros entretient une relation adultère avec la jeune Noémi, qui vit sur une petite île au milieu du Danube, et se retrouve à son tour la cible des brigands…
