Deux sœurs, Tae et Yo, reviennent dans leur ancienne maison qui va bientôt être démolie. En rangeant les souvenirs de famille, Tae trouve une boîte rouge remplie de recettes et de lettres écrites par leur mère, décédée il y a 20 ans. Dans ces recettes et ces lettres, elle découvre que sa mère a connu des difficultés dans sa vie en raison de son déménagement du Japon à Taïwan, de la mort de son mari taïwanais et d'un combat contre le cancer. Tae se rend à Taïwan pour retracer le passé de sa mère, se remémorant les plats qu'elle préparait pour la famille.

Yoneda Katsumi (Nishida Toshiyuki) is a police sergeant who exudes little presence.One day, Yoneda happens to come across an article on a cafe called Kohaku in a booklet at his regular cafe. Then he abruptly takes leave and heads to Kohaku which is located in Uozu, Toyama Prefecture by bullet train. For some reason, he has documents on an unsolved arson cum murder case which took place in Kichijoji 25 years ago.The owner of Kohaku is Arai Toshio (Terao Akira) who has seemingly sad eyes. They spend time together with his only regular customer, Hirai Sachiko (Suzuki Kyoka), a married woman who works at the port’s fisheries cooperative. Their interactions gradually start to deepen even as they sense the darkness in each other. What is the fate that awaits them?

A scandal with another woman is also revealed. Kyoko Hasumi's life as a "good wife" begins to change. To protect her children, she decides to work again as a lawyer. She is hired temporarily at a law office and begins to work as a lawyer for the first time in 16 years.

The show is based on the Ogiri style of rakugo, a form of traditional Japanese storytelling. The ogiri system sees a host put questions to a panel of fellow rakugo storytellers who must produce a funny or witty response. Shoten's format thus sees the host—currently Shunpūtei Shōta—pose questions to six storytellers (known as "ogiri members") seated left to right (as the audience sees them) as follows: San'yūtei Koyūza (sky-blue kimono), San'yūtei Kōraku (pink kimono), Hayashiya Kikuo (yellow kimono), Hayashiya Sanpei II (beige kimono), San'yūtei Enraku VI (purple kimono), Hayashiya Taihei (orange kimono).
