A university professor, confident that everything which occurs in life has a rational explanation, finds his beliefs severely challenged when, during a vacation to a remote coastal village in Norfolk, he blows through an ancient whistle discovered on a beach, awakening horrors beyond human understanding.

Une grande partie de l'action du film tourne autour des paroles des chants de marche des soldats, et de nombreuses scènes décrivent certains des incidents les plus célèbres (et infâmes) de la guerre, notamment l'assassinat du duc Ferdinand, la rencontre de Noël entre les Britanniques et les Des soldats allemands dans le no man's land et l'anéantissement à leurs côtés d'une force de soldats irlandais nouvellement arrivés au front, après avoir réussi à capturer une crête longtemps disputée.
