Août 1980. Après le premier pèlerinage de Jean-Paul II en Pologne, les travailleurs commencent des grèves contre le régime. Le père Jerzy Popiełuszko arrive pour célébrer la messe des ouvriers. Le prêtre comprend les revendications des ouvriers, les aide et participe à la contestation de Solidarność. Mais la loi martiale est proclamée dans le pays. Varsovie est occupée par des chars et les grèves sont brutalement réprimées. Le père Jerzy devient témoin de la grande manifestation d’indépendance des travailleurs polonais, mais aussi de la répression dramatique exercée par la police. Dans ses homélies, il parvient à exprimer ce que les gens pensent mais ne peuvent pas dire. Ses paroles deviennent le guide d’une nation en révolte. Les fidèles qui viennent l’écouter sont de plus en plus nombreux tandis que la police politique tente de l’intimider…

A female photographer from Western Europe drives through Poland and stops in a village. By chance, her eye is caught by the arrival of a wedding party. This marks the point of departure for several stories which unfold during the course of the wedding.

The writer Zbigniew takes part in a psychotherapeutic session, during which he tells his story.

Januszek - the town's Casanova, returns from the army. Waiting for him at home is Blada, the mother of his future child, the daughter of the head of the local security service, who arranged for the candidate to be a son-in-law to shorten his military service. Januszek, who has had many women's hearts broken on his conscience, is not eager to get married.

A chorus rehearsal. Karol and Henryk are among the soloists. Like most of the singers, the two men lead the pretty quiet lives of senior citizens. They have been a couple for years, but no one outside their apartment knows about it. One day, they receive an invitation that shakes their meticulously hidden everyday life.
