Julie de Hauranne, une jeune actrice française parlant la langue de sa mère, le portugais, mais qui n'a jamais été à Lisbonne, arrive pour la première fois dans cette ville, où elle doit tourner dans un film inspiré des Lettres de la Religieuse Portugaises de Guilleragues. Elle se trouve vite fascinée par une religieuse qui vient prier toute les nuits dans la chapelle de Nossa Senhora do Monte sur la colline de Graça. Au cours de son séjour la jeune femme fait toute une série de rencontres, qui, à l'image de son existence antérieure, semblent éphémères et sans suite, mais après une nuit où elle parle enfin avec la religieuse, elle entrevoit le sens de sa vie et de son destin.
