Pierre Vignol, an artist wintering in Arizona, is bitten by a snake. He is taken by his friend, Tom Hornby, to Padre Francisco, who prescribes for the bite. Pierre, at the request of Tom, returns to his cabin and Tom takes care of him. Later Tom discovers a tube in Lost River. This proves to be a painting and Pierre takes it to Padre Francisco. The Padre reads him an interesting history of Fr. Bartolomeo. founder of the Mission, and of how the painting came to be discovered in Lost River, for it had been thrown there by a monk when the Mission was attacked by the Indians, owing to the abduction of the Chief's daughter by a villainous Spaniard. Tom takes the painting to New York where he sells it and gives the money to the wife of Tom, who has been too poor to bring her and the baby to Arizona.

Here she meets 'Chuck' Hemingway, who despite his rough exterior is likewise a child of wealth, and a Yale graduate to boot. When Van Ness violently rejects his romantic overtures, Hemingway turns to an old Indian chum for advice. The Indian suggests rather chauvinistically that the way to win a headstrong girl is to "tame" her -- that is, treat 'er rough and make 'er like it.

Attempting to win Rachel Prouty from his rival, Arthur Machim, Homer continues the deception by announcing that his employer, Kort and Bailly, has dispatched him to enroll stockholders for a proposed new plant to be built in Mainsville. Machim discovers the sham and denounces Homer as a crook.

Un couple d'Anglais est envoyé en Afrique anglaise pour faire cesser la capture d'esclaves par les négriers arabes. Sur le bateau qui les y emmène, ils sont sauvés d'une mutinerie. En Afrique, après avoir accouché, la mère décède. Puis le mari décède à son tour. L'enfant est recueilli par une tribu de singes. Tarzan sera élevé par Kalla, l'une d'elles. L'enfant est heureux parmi eux. Regardant son reflet dans l'eau, il se rend compte qu'il n'est pas un singe. Il s'approche alors d'une tribu africaine. Il vole un pagne et le revêt. Il découvre un couteau, arme qui lui permet de devenir l'une des créatures les plus craintes des animaux de la jungle. Binns, qui avait été capturé par des négriers arabes, le découvre après s'être échappé. Il retourne en Angleterre informer les personnes intéressées de la situation. Une équipe est envoyée en Afrique à la recherche de Tarzan. Quand on le découvre, il est adulte. Une gente dame tombe amoureuse de lui. Tarzan apprend alors l'amour.
