Dans le Paris du xve siècle, la gitane Esméralda danse sur le parvis de Notre-Dame. Sa beauté bouleverse Jehan, frère de l'archidiacre de la cathédrale. Jehan décide de l'enlever avec l'aide de Quasimodo mais elle est sauvée par une escouade d'archers commandée par Phoebus de Châteaupers. Ce dernier, sensible à la beauté de la Gitane, l'invite dans une auberge. Esmeralda réussi à s'échapper mais Quasimodo est fait prisonnier et condamné à recevoir vingt coups de fouet en place publique. Il réclame à boire et c'est Esméralda, dont il est secrètement amoureux, qui lui donne de l'eau fraîche. Phoebus est fiancé à Fleur-de-Lys mais, séduit par la Gitane, il lui donne rendez-vous. Jehan, qui les a suivis, poignarde Phoebus.

Shortly after being made the executor of a wealthy man's estate, a man murders his benefactor. He then makes a play for the widow, who rebuffs him. To escape his arduous pursuit, she takes her little daughter on a trip but dies in an auto accident. The daughter is rescued but disappears. Her grandparents spend years looking for her, as does the executor who killed her father--if she's found she'll inherit the estate and he won't get a penny. He aims to see that she's never found, and if she is he plans to see that she doesn't live long enough to make a claim to the estate.

Sandy Doyle, gambler and political chief of a small border town, seeks to gain control of the Bar-X Ranch, owned by Rufe Rickson, to further some undercover activities of his own. He counts on Rickson's inability to stay away from gambling as the means to his ultimate success. Government investigator Oliver Shea and his assistant, Dan Haggerty, start a fight in Doyle's place when they see Rickson being cheated and are invited to the Bar-X where Oliver and Helen Rickson, Rufe's daughter, discover interest in each other and Dan finds himself pursued by Bell, the ranch cook. Sheriff Larson brings the prize money for the $5,000 race of the Rodeo Association, and that night it is stolen.
