In ancient Babylon, SEMIRAMIDE (Anderson) encourages her lover Assur (Ramey) to murder her husband, King Ninus. Her son, Ninius, disappears, believed dead, and Semiramide rules in her own right. 15 years later, as the opera opens, she is about to announce the name of her successor. Idreno (Olsen) and Assur are the leading candidates for the throne and the hand of Princess Azema (Shin), but Semiramide has taken a fancy to young Arsace (Horne), her victorious military leader who has been summoned back to Babylon. Only the high priest Oroe (Cheek) knows that Arsace is actually Ninius, spirited away to safety after the coup. As the queen announces Arsace as her successor, the ghost of her husband appears from his tomb, demanding that Arsace punish the late king’s murderers... A Vienne, en novembre 1823. Au coeur de la nuit, un vieil homme égaré clame cette étonnante confession : "Pardonne, Mozart, pardonne à ton assassin !" Ce fantôme, c'est Antonio Salieri, jadis musicien réputé et compositeur officiel de la Cour. Dès l'enfance, il s'était voué tout entier au service de Dieu, s'engageant à le célébrer par sa musique, au prix d'un incessant labeur. Pour prix de ses sacrifices innombrables, il réclamait la gloire éternelle. Son talent, reconnu par l'empereur mélomane Joseph II, valut durant quelques années à Salieri les plus hautes distinctions. Mais, en 1781, un jeune homme arrive à Vienne, précédé d'une flatteuse réputation. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart est devenu le plus grand compositeur du siècle. Réalisant la menace que représente pour lui ce surdoué arrogant dont il admire le profond génie, Salieri tente de l'évincer.

L'action se déroule en Gaule transalpine occupée par les Romains, vers l'an 50 avant Jésus-Christ. La druidesse Norma a eu deux enfants de son amant Pollione, proconsul romain en Gaule. Mais ce dernier l'a déjà oubliée et ne songe désormais qu'à la jeune novice Adalgisa, qu'il rêve d'emmener à Rome.

This is the historic concert performance of the final operatic version of Bernstein's Candide. It was recorded on December 13, 1989 at the Barbican Centre, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with a stellar cast of operatic stars gracing the solo parts. The programme lasts a full 2hrs 27 mins. It marks the end of a long and tortured journey for the musical/operetta that spent much of its first 35 years as an orphan in the musical wilderness.
