Dans un village d’Italie, sous le chapiteau itinérant où se déroule une émission radiodiffusée en perte d’audience, l’animateur Carlo Mastelli passe le micro à Marina, la jeune institutrice, qui lui a suggéré l’idée de lancer un appel à tous les auditeurs pour qu’ils envoient des cartes postales de leur pays à Tonino, un jeune élève en grande précarité. Des artistes et célébrités, principalement d’Italie et de France, entendent son appel et vont être nombreux à lui répondre, ce qui va, par la même occasion, doper l’audimat de l’émission et apporter à Carlo encore plus de bonheur qu’il ne le soupçonnait...

Hubert Franier, an honest hospital extern, should never had got into trouble had he not been infatuated with Véra, a beautiful but stupid creature, who led him down the wrong path. Because of her and her friends, Hubert, who naively thought he was taking part in a practical joke, was actually a party to a car theft. Because of him, Monsieur Pierre, a good-natured caretaker, is in hospital. Racked with remorse, Hubert decides to hide from the police and finds refuge at his friend Louis'. Louis is a very sociable artist and his flat is the meeting place of many a colorful character. There, Hubert gets to know Candy, a Black American saxophonist, as well as Boubou, a Black little boy. He also meets Marie-Lou, a bar girl who dreams of becoming a nurse.

Harry Louis is a jazz clarinetist, obsessed by his art: he would like to match Sidney Bechet; the famous musician tries to give a piece of advice to his fan who, accidentally, kills him in a fit of anger. With the help of his mistress, Muriel, who has witnessed the scene, Harry does away with Bechet's dead body. But, during this gruesome trip, Muriel is accused of being responsible of a road accident. The insurance company sends a young man, Laurent, to investigate.

Hardworking Minnie (Cora Green) marries "Dollar" Bill (Bud Harris) a shady gambler after her money and her attractive daughter, Sue (Izanetta Wilcois). Sue meanwhile, is in love with Bob (Carl Hough), an idealist fond of looking out over the skyline and saying "Harlem... there's so much to be done here--it's fairly screaming for leadership." When Bob decides to organize the community against local racketeers he little realizes would-be father-in-law Dollar Bill is one of them. Bill meanwhile has problems of his own: A vicious white mob from lower Manhattan is muscling in on his action, and bullets are about to fly.
