Vers 1832, pendant une épidémie de choléra, une jeune femme noble, Pauline de Théus, tente de regagner le château en Provence où l'attend son mari. Elle croise la route d'un jeune colonel de hussards italien, Angelo Pardi, carbonaro par ailleurs, poursuivi par les Autrichiens pour sa participation aux complots révolutionnaires, qui recherche Giuseppe son frère de lait. Ils voyagent ensemble et mesurent combien la situation fait ressortir le pire ou le meilleur des individus qu’ils croisent.

Dans un État d'Amérique du Sud. Paulina Escobar assiste à un concert de Schubert. L'orchestre interprète «La jeune fille et la mort», un morceau qu'elle déteste. De retour chez elle, Paulina attend le retour de son mari Gerardo, un juriste. Elle apprend par la radio qu'il a accepté de parrainer la commission d'enquête chargée de faire le point sur les exactions du régime militaire qui, voici peu, gouvernait le pays. Bientôt, Gerardo arrive, accompagné d'un voisin qui l'a dépanné. L'intrusion de ce dernier, a priori anodine, perturbe pourtant gravement Paulina. Non sans raison : elle croit en effet reconnaître le médecin qui jadis la tortura...

Nino is a 300-year-old boy who lives with his uncle, Dr. Victor, a sorcerer and scientist, and his great-aunt Morgana, a 6,000-year-old witch. The three of them live in a castle in the middle of the city of São Paulo. Apprentice sorcerer, Nino has never attended a school, because of the unusual age of 300 years. His parents left him living with Victor and Morgan, because they needed to travel on an expedition into outer space, taking their two younger brothers. In spite of having animal and supernatural friends in the Castle, Nino, feeling lack of friends like him, decides to do a spell he learned with his Uncle Victor, and ended up bringing to the Castle, three children who had just left school. Free of loneliness, Nino receives the visit of the three daily.
