Spyros, un apiculteur grec vieillissant, assiste au mariage de sa fille. La fête est si triste qu'il choisit ce jour-là de quitter sa famille. Au volant de son antique camion, dans lequel il a chargé ses ruches, il commence à sillonner les routes de Grèce sans autre but que celui de trouver un jour, peut-être, le champ de fleurs idéal pour ses butineuses. Il fait ainsi la connaissance d'une jeune marginale qu'il prend en stop. Il s'arrête ensuite chez sa fille cadette, qu'il n'a pas vue depuis plusieurs années, puis s'installe dans un vieil hôtel décrépit, où l'auto-stoppeuse le rejoint. Une étrange histoire d'amour naît alors entre ces deux êtres à la dérive…

Son périple le mène d'abord en Albanie, puis en Macédoine. C'est ensuite un événement de son enfance qui resurgit à sa mémoire. Le cinéaste quitte la jeune femme et prend un bateau qui remonte le Danube jusqu'à Belgrade…
